About Breathing Space
“This kind of ‘blue sky’ development is all too rare.”
Andy Gracie (Host Productions), Breathing Space artist 2002.
Initiated by Arnolfini in 1999, Breathing Space seeks to bring innovative
new live art and performance to audiences across the UK and beyond.
Breathing Space commissions artists to explore and experiment with nascent
ideas or work outside of their usual artistic practice. Uniquely, Breathing
Space works with partner venues right from the start of the process, so that
no matter what shape each piece takes, we can offer all these varied experiences
to audiences all over the world.
So far, Breathing Space has commissioned and presented 15 new pieces of work
including:
- A robot learning dance moves from insects
- A journey through sound and light in a motion simulator
- A one-on-one encounter in a Victorian swimming baths
- Bringing films to life at the end of cinema
- A personal history through maps and accidents
- A generational history from Pakistan to Manchester
- A caravan filling slowly with bits and pieces of its surroundings
Previous Breathing Space work has been shown in:
Bristol, Manchester, Nottingham,
Glasgow, Newcastle, Liverpool, Sydney, Perth, Nagoya, Mexico
City, Helsinki, Valencia, Barcelona, Berlin
